Addicted & Donald have some excellent advice. Here’s my 2 cents.
In clear lakes & ponds where the bass feed heavily/mainly on shad & shiners “double willow-leaf bladed” spinnerbaits should/will produce a little better than colorado & indiana single blades. Also, in clear conditions, a spinnerbait with a “realisitc” head design will almost always be a better bet.
In darker, “cloudier” water conditions “single colorados & indiana bladed” spinnerbaits should/will produce better. Gold, copper, chartruese, & general “duller” colored S-bait’s work better in darker water.
Willow-leaf blades put out less vibration but have a better “flash” & a shad/shiner/baitfish “silhouette”.
In comparison, colorado’s & indiana’s have LESS flash & no “silhouette” but TONS of vibration. (That’s why colorado & indiana spinnerbaits are tops for night/low-light condition fishing!)
The key to using a spinner bait when you are fishing in a boat along a shorline is: Try to get as close to structure as possible. “Swim” your S-bait parallel to logs, docks, & each side of boats, ETC.
When you cast, try various “speeds” & “presentation’s” to determine what the fish want. IE: “Slow-roll”, “Burning”, Medium-retrieve, Etc.
I like “Titanium Spinnerbaits” , “Hank Parker Spinnerbaits”,”Strike King” and I “make” on the spot spinnerbaits by matching various jigs with “jig-spinners”,(making “jig spinner” spinnerbaits cost next to nothing and you get a quality bait because you KNOW who made it! lol).
Hope this helps ya? I suggest you wait for Exert’s answer. He is an excellent/dedicated Bass-fisherman. BassFisherman is excellent too!
Good luck!

if you are fishing heavily pressured areas I suggest a small 1/16 ounze mini-king spinnerbait which looks like this

I prefer the white color and the yellow color. I have caught some 5lb bass along with 2lb perch, nice crappie, sunnies, trout, chubbs, and pickerel. it is like the beetle spin an overall effective lure. I find the single blade to be very decisive to the fish. double blades and tripple blades is like hooking two plastic worms on one hook not too effective. it is very cost effecient like $1.50 at Walmart. I highly suggest one for a “go to” lure.
the key to using a spinnerbait is to hold the pole at desired depth. hold it up for topwater action similar to a buzzbait, hold midway for middle of the water action, and hold down for deeper action. you have to determine the speed of which you reel the spinnerbait by many factors such as visibility (sunny? raining?) time of day, size of fish, and many others. start with a faster paced reel and at mid depth and experiment from there every 15 minutes to see what the fish like.

Avoid cheap spinner baits. Use Strike King 3/8 to 1/2 oz. and get a couple with different colors. I like the yellow/green, white, and minnow colored ones. You can get these at Wal-Mart. Do not use a swivel and tie directly to the bend in the loop in front of the spinner. Make sure the metal arm is in alignment with the hook body.
