From February through September, Blue and White Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish and Yellowfin Tuna are to be found in fresh runs in Playa del Carmen. Internationally known as the top sailfish hot spot in the world, fishermen are drawn here by the thousands. If you’re a serious angler, it doesn’t get better than this.

It’s because of the unusual topography-Playa del Carmen sits on the edge of an underwater valley. This brings the habitat of the huge game fish right to the shore. You can look down into the darkest blue water you’ve ever seen. The southern beaches of this area with Dorado, Wahoo, Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, Red Snapper, Grouper, Spanish Mackerel, and other fish in abundance draw sports fishermen from all over the world.

Some fishermen come exclusively for the seasonal Marlin runs. Even 500-pounders have been pulled out here. Given the 500 species that live in these waters, everyone can fish-the pros and the amateurs and the beginners.

You can fish inshore if that is your preference or you can fish offshore. Inshore, trophy Snapper, Grouper, Spanish Mackerel and Yellowtail Jacks are pulled out of the water all through the year. Offshore, Atlantic Sailfish, blue and Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, and Wahoo are caught on fly rods.

You can rent a boat if you feel up to managing one yourself or you can charter one. If you want to join others in a charter to reduce the cost, those opportunities are available also. Most rentals assure an experienced, English-speaking captain. Soft drinks and ice and water are commonly provided. However, if you want beer or liquor, you will need to bring it yourself. Tackle, bait, and fishing licenses are also typically provided.

Some boats require some experience; however, both men and women are welcome aboard and some providers encourage beginners to come along and even offer lessons. March, April, May, and June are the best months for fishing. You can expect your experienced captain to know the best spots for whatever fish you prefer to try to hook.

Some Suggestions for Conventional Tackle

For the months from May to October, for Dorado, Striped Marlin, and Sailfish, a couple of six- to seven-foot trolling rods are best. If you have roller guides, fighting the fish will be easier, but they are not absolutely necessary. For trolling, 30- to 50-pound monofilament on a Penn 4/0 (or equivalent) with a lever or a star drag will work just fine. However, for bait casting, a Penn 500 and 20-40 pound monofilament is good. You’ll also want to bring a Penn 650ss or its equivalent with 10-20 pound monofilament. Three-hundred yards of line should be sufficient for any of the reels. Actually, you may be able to make do with no more than 200 yards but you’ll be glad for the extra line if you have it.

Rapalas size CD11 to CD14 or greater lures in green or blue mackerel are said to work best. Also iron spoon-type lures in chrome or blue/chrome have been used. Another one: Yo-Zuri crystal minnow lures in blue mackerel or pink and silver. For tackle, 80- to 120-pount monofiliament and Mustad 6 to 7 hooks should be adequate. If you’re experienced enough to experience with other tackle, your boat captain will probably go along. You should have a hard case container for your rods, which you can buy or you can make one with PVC.

These requirements may differ slightly if you’re fishing from November to April. It would be best to call your boat provider for suggestions in that case.

Distinguishing Trout Fishing Lures

Trout fishing lures are a must for any trout fishing expedition. Bringing the right lures could make a difference in how your fishing trip would turn out to be. There is a wide array of such lures that one can find in the market and they come in various kinds, shapes, sizes, colors, and weight.

For a novice trout fisher, the variety of trout fishing lures available can be confusing especially if one has to choose which of them to bring to a fishing trip. Even seasoned trout fishermen could not readily decide which lure is best for a particular situation.

The kind of trout and the kind of bait that would entice them, the area where you are planning to fish, and your fishing activity are but some of the considerations that you should bear in mind when choosing a lure. There are also other factors worthy of consideration like water temperature, sunlight, and water clarity. For example, avoid using shiny lures when fishing on a sunny day because their reflection would repel trout.

The kind of lures you should choose are those that look like the trout’s natural prey as they are more likely to respond to these. The resemblance must not only be in colors and appearance but also in size and weight. Many also recommend the use of living baits like minnows, water worms, and nightcrawlers. Some even swear on the effectivity of baits like mallows and sweet corn kernels. These can be cast for dead drift or you can choose to use them as subsurface streamers.

Spinners, jigs, and spoons are some of the trout fishing lures commonly used by trout fishers. To catch steelhead and rainbow trout, many use spinners because its movements are very similar to the movement of the trout’s usual prey. Spoons also imitate the movement of small bait fish so trout are also attracted to these. Jigs, on the other hand, are also handy but they must be used with caution as they can easily get tangled.

The rooster tail is also another common lure used by trout fishermen. Since its movement resembles that of a minnow’s, which is a common food for trout, using this also brings good results. The mini stickbait is also another lure that looks like a minnow. It also resembles a fingerling trout.

There are also lures that are best used for particular seasons. In spring when trout are still a little lazy and are still at the bottom of the body of water, the kind of lure that is suitable for this circumstance is one that is not very heavy yet not very light. It should not be heavy enough to be caught in the rocks and plants at the bottom but it must also be not too light for it to reach the trout. A spinner and worm rigs are best used when there is a lot of runoff.

Spinners are what many people use when trying to hook a rainbow trout in spring time. Streamlined spoon lures, on the other hand, are best used when fishing in a lake for brown trout. They should not be heavier than ¼ oz. Moreover, a spinning rod with weighted minnow plugs is best to use when fishing in deep pools, lakes, rivers, and estuaries.

There are a lot of matters to consider if you want to choose the right lure for a specific situation. But then, it will always be a good idea to bring a number of lures of various kinds as they could come handy when trout fishing. To be able to catch a trout, you would need to have the right lure at the right time and at the right place.

Occasionally, I hit these auctions for handpainted lures and they are selling for AMAZING prices.

1 lure- $40-$50 (EXAMPLE-Handpainted Wee-R’s, DT’s, Etc,)!

Although I KNOW some people collect lures, I believe MOST of these people bidding these lures intend to fish with them!

I paint my own lures for A LOT less!

Is a $40-$50 lure going “overboard”? What’s your opinion?

I’m wondering about sites like Meetic and Match.com and others that allow men and women to put up profiles for likely candidates to happen into their lives when they haven’t walked in physically.

My objection is that as a man I am obliged to pay a monthly fee (discounts applicable) to be able to reply to any messages that come to me after the first month or so of being able to use their chat and e-mail services to my hearts content, whereas the women that post their profiles are allowed free access without limitations in time.

Surely this is a form of prostitution? Surely this is sexism in the digital age at the very least. Dangling women from web pages as if they were ladies sitting in windows in Amsterdam, for Pete’s sake!

Obviously us guys are dumb, or we wouldn’t fork over, but the girls are quietly sitting back and helping these kinds of scams; they are the lures on someone’s fishing line.

Do you think it is fair? Sleazy? Similar to free drinks for women in nightclubs?

Hi, I’ve decided to take up fishing after buying a cheap telescopic rod and reel for a bit of fun while on holiday in Tasmania.

Having been lure fishing around the Port Phillip bay area, I have been advised by local fishing enthusiasts to invest in decent fishing gear for better casting and spinning.

Please advise on decent combos of rod, reel and line.. and reasonable price to pay.. and please briefly give reasoning for your suggestions. I believe target fish in the Port Phillip area are Flathead, Snapper and Whiting.

Due to limited storage space, rod length is a major limiting factor for me. The rod must be at least 2 piece and easily transportable in an all wheel drive SUV.

Bonuses would be suitability for bait fishing off the rocks and fresh water fishing.

Many thanks in advance.
