Know Your Trout Fishing Lures

Trout fishing would never be complete without trout fishing lures. Your fishing trip will be a success if you were able to bring the right lures and use them correctly. There are various kinds of such lures and they are in different kinds, colors, weight, shapes, and sizes.

Since there are many lures to choose from when you want to catch a trout, it is so easy to get befuddled with the array of choices before you. The question whether which of the available lures are appropriate to bring to a fishing trip is something that is not that easy to answer for certain.

Some important considerations here are knowing the area of the fishing expedition, knowing the kind of trout available and the type of bait that would attract them, and your planned fishing activity. Also worth the consideration are factors like water clarity, sunlight, and water temperature. These are very important because if you fish on a sunny day, for example, you should know that the reflection of shiny lures would repel a trout so you better avoid such lures.

In choosing a lure, make sure that it is closely similar to the usual prey of the trout. The similarity must also be in its size and weight and not only in shape and color. It would also be good to use live baits like water worms, minnows, and nightcrawlers. You can also try mallows and sweet corn kernels as baits and see if you can catch a trout with these. You can use these as subsurface streamers or you can cast them for dead drift.

When talking about trout fishing lures, some of the most common ones that come to mind are jigs, spoons, and spinners. Jigs are very handy but they can easily get entangled with aquatic plants or rocks underwater. Spinners are those that many trout fishers use to catch rainbow and steelhead trout because this kind of lure resembles the movement of the trout’s common prey. Spoons, on the other hand, mimic the movement patterns of a small bait fish and they are oftentimes successful in attracting trout.

Another lure commonly used in trout fishing is the rooster tail. Its movement is similar to a minnow’s, a typical trout food, and this is also good to use because it appeals to a trout. Also resembling a minnow, and a fingerling trout at the same time, is the mini stickbait.

There are lures that should be used in certain seasons. For example, in spring when trout are still slow-moving and are still deep under water, it is advisable to use lures of suitable weight. These lures must not be too light for them to be able to reach the place where the trout are, yet they must also be not too heavy to drag at the bottom. For bodies of water where there is a lot of runoff, it is best to use worm rigs with a spinner.

To hook a rainbow trout in springtime, try using spinners. When fishing in the lake for rainbow trout, using streamlined spoon lures can give you a nice-sized trout. The maximum weight of this kind of lure to be used under the said circumstance must be ¼ oz. You can also try using weighted minnow plugs in a spinning rod when trout fishing in lakes, deep pools, estuaries, and rivers.

There are right kinds of lures to use in specific situations. So to make sure that you have the right lure at the right place and time, do your research and bring a number of trout fishing lures that you can choose from when trout fishing.

By Michael Webster

Excerpted from “The LemonFast” by Michael Webster and Michael J. Lavery.

Whenever possible one should eat fresh organic foods or if not possible take a whole food supplement, rather than a manufactured mineral or vitamin supplement. Plant derived vitamins and minerals are 98 percent absorbable whereas the others absorption rates are less or unknown. You can take all the vitamins in the world, but if you aren’t taking minerals along with them, they won’t do you much good.

There can be major differences between whole food and vitamin and mineral supplements. Rich and powerful pharmaceutical companies that also provide most all medical drugs and chemicals manufacture vitamin and mineral supplements. Many of these supplements are reported to be synthesized, by using coal tar, petroleum, discarded animal by-products, powdered rocks and shells. Vitamin B-12 comes from ground cattle organs, which can be loaded with steroids, antibiotics, herbicides, and pesticides. Perhaps the most sickening is their use of fecal matter in the form of activated sewage sludge. It is inexpensive to obtain and is loaded with B-12. It is always best however in our opinion to provide the human body with as much variety as possible of whole, uncooked natural organic foods; they retain their living enzymes and their full spectrum of bio-available vitamins, minerals, and trace elements.

Only eat plant foods that are centered around fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, and all organically grown. Remember all claimed organically grown foods might not be. You really must know first about the soil the plants are being grown in. Is there now or has there ever been herbicides applied to the soil? Now or in the past has there been pesticides applied to the plants? DDT for an example once in the human system it can take weeks or even months before there are no detectable residue and can take years to be completely removed from some soils. And remember just a couple of decades ago chemical companies like Monsanto were claiming DDT was good for our health. While experts say toxic pollution levels declined dramatically in the Great Lakes since the 1970s, the decline in persistent chemical pollution leveled off in the 1980s. In some cases toxic chemical levels in the Great Lakes have recently risen, as atmospheric deposits of PCBs, DDT and other banned chemicals in the US are blown thousands of miles by winds from countries that still use these compounds. As a result, fresh samples of DDT can be found today in the tissues of Great Lakes fish, even though DDT was banned for use in the US in the early 1970s.

These chemical deposits are not limited to the Great Lakes. EPA reported that fish advisories against eating PCB contaminated fish rose 41% across the US from 1995 to 1996. Consumers need to educate themselves and make informed decisions. If you must eat fish you can reduce your exposure to PCBs in fish by the way you cook the fish and should avoid altogether certain types of fish for women of reproductive age if how and where the fish came from. It is believed that 95% of human exposure to toxic chemicals comes through the diet, and fish is a major route of exposure since they more readily bioaccumulate toxic compounds. Still, these fish advisories are too often ignored by consumers or not enforced by local health agencies.

The only sure and safe way to control the soil, plants and the water is to grow a garden yourself and you will know for sure what you allowed into the soil and what you put into the soil. Knowledge of what type of fertilizers and/or pesticides you used would help you understand what is in the plants. In most people’s back yards or a shared community victory garden you can learn how to grow truly organically. If you believe you just are not ready to give up meat than eat only lean meats from organically fed animals, along with other sources of organic protein. You may want to consider, if you have access to some land the raising of your own Buffalo or Ostrich or Rabbit or a combination for Varity. These meats are very testy and have 50% to 80% less fat than commercial beef or pork, depending on what you feed them. Again you may have to grow your own animal feed to control what the animal is eating and you will know you used no hormones, fast grow chemicals or harmful medications that can be passed on to you and yours.

You should always exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday. That’s about 2 miles of walking per day or less jogging or swimming. Drink clean, pure fresh water daily, with a minimum intake of at least 8 or more 8-ounce glasses of water. Drink one eight oz. glass of water with a tea spoon of pure organic raw apple cider vinegar and one tea spoon of pure organic maple syrup grade B, before each meal when you are eating. Take one table spoon of fresh Bee Pollen daily and moderate amounts of Sea Salt, keep the overall volume intake down, don’t overeat and wallaaa… the pounds start falling off immediately and health is more likely to be restored.

By taking the LemonFastTM miracle drink you should reach your best body weight for you and you can maintain this perfect body weight. Following this program you may live longer and be healthier. Do it, do it now, do it for you, do it for those who love you, and do it for the love of life.

Tenerife may be famous for its beautiful scenery, stunning volcanic beaches and year round sunshine, but for many the real story is in the water. Windsurfing and other watersports are incredibly popular on the island, but more and more tourists are choosing to venture further and further out into the island’s waters to enjoy deep sea diving and fishing.

Fishing in Tenerife is fantastic and there are many harbours primarily placed for seaside fishing and there are many fishing excursion companies who will seek to cater to your every fishing need, whether you’re simply catching small game with a basic fishing pole on a boat just off the shore or steel yourself to head out for the deep ocean where the real magic happens. For a small fee, the fishing excursion company will take you out onto the ocean for either a half a day or full day trip and supply you with the lures you need to catch all manner of different fish. Fishermen can expect to catch blue fin tuna, dorado, big eye tuna and wahoo among others.

The blue marlin is without a shadow of a doubt the most sought after catch for big game fish hunters the world over and Tenerife can currently boast to holding the record for the largest blue marlin ever landed. In 1999 a blue marlin weighing 972lbs was caught, breaking both the world record and Tenerife’s previous record. Another prized catch swims through the waters of Tenerife: the legendary mako shark. This shark is only one of the many that it’s possible to catch off of the island’s coast.

Fishing holidays aren’t just for the die-hard hobbyists: these holidays can be enjoyed by all types of tourists, from families, to couples and groups of friends. Children can enjoy catching fish off the coast and learning about them from guides, before throwing them back into the ocean, and if they get bored they can play on the beach. Couples and friends can enjoy bonding experiences on the sea, catching their own dinner and revelling in the experience of operating their own boats. For those not confident enough to go it alone, the fishing excursion companies also offer private charter options but many have a limit on how many people they will take out on the boat at once so make sure your party complies with this restriction.

There is plenty more information on fishing holidays in Tenerife available on the web and there are a lot of beautiful resorts you can choose to stay in while you’re on dry land.

“What fly fishing equipment should I get?” I’m often asked that question by folk who are interested in learning how to fly fish. Sometimes, it seems so complicated. “Is it expensive?” is the second most often asked question.

Let’s start with the second question first. While you can spend thousands of dollars on gear, you don’t need to nor should you spend more than a couple of hundred dollars if you’re just starting out. Depending on what conditions you will be fishing, you might even get away with less than that, too. I recommend that you speak with casting instructor who knows your area and what conditions you’ll be fishing in at first. That person will be able to put you on the right track as to the specifics of what gear you should have.

To answer the question about what fly fishing equipment you’ll need to get started, here are the basics. You can of course purchase much more, but why not wait before spending lots of money to find out if you’ll enjoy the sport in the first place?

A fly rod

A reel that will hold the line

Line (usually a floating line will do fine if you’re targeting small to medium size rivers)

8 lb. test monofilament that you will use for leader material

Flies

Clippers

Sunglasses

Optional equipment when you are starting out:

Waders to keep you dry if fishing rivers

A vest or bag to carry gear (and perhaps your lunch and a flask filled with something to drink if you are so inclined)

Landing Net

And that’s about it. The conditions you will fish will dictate the length of your rod as well as the weight of the line you will be casting. Most beginners can get away with selecting a rod in the 8 to 9 foot range and 5-6 line weight (wt.). Unless you will be after big fish, you can get by with a very inexpensive fly reel. All it does in most cases is hold the line for you. In many situations where the target fish are trout, you likely wont even need to use the drag on your reel. In most cases, tension is applied to the line with your hand.

Although many fly anglers have all sorts of systems for determining the correct leader thickness and taper, don’t worry about that for now. Because the lure in fly fishing are very light weight, you are using the weight of the fly line and the ability of the rod to power the line forward when you cast your fly. Therefore, fly line is much thicker than the monofilament used in spinning or baitcast fishing. That’s where the monofilament or leader comes in – it is tied to the end of the fly line, generally an 8 foot length is fine, and to the other end of the leader, you will tie your fly.

Although it is fun to tie your own flies, at this point it is probably best to obtain some from someone you know that ties up flies, or purchase them for a shop that sells them. If it is a local shop, they will be able to advise you as to what patterns that will be most likely to entice the fish to hit. At first, stick with nymphs or wet flies. Dry fly fishing can be a lot of fun, but I’d recommend learning to cast and catch fish with a fly rod using nymphs.

Sunglasses are a must when fly fishing! The last thing you want to do is damage your eye with a misplaced cast and a fly stuck in your eyeball. Think safety first, no matter what you are doing. If you have decided to also purchase a pair of waders, make sure you are familiar with the water you will be wading in.

There are a number of resources available to you to help you decide what fly fishing gear is best for you. Read reviews of the gear that is available to you, talk to other fly anglers, and perhaps the best advice of all: Hire a fly fishing instructor for at least a half day. This will help prevent you from forming bad habits that will be difficult to break later on.
