Can you smell it?

Spring is coming. One of the seasons every die hard fisherman is waiting for.I always brush up on my knowledge before “prime time” fishing begins. And today, I’m going to serve you some information that will tickle a big bass’ greed glands… so he has no choice but to strike hard. In the spirit of arming yourself with attack triggering insider secrets before the spring fishing frenzy is upon us, check this out: Largemouth Bass Tips Here are just a few of hundreds of old school secrets that will give you a serious edge before the bell goes off in the spring:

* The early spring “flip and sit”technique that stimulates big bass’greed glands before the spawn. (Dan will also give you a list of baits that bigger bass destroy using this technique…)

* How Dave humiliated a group of fishing braggarts by catching 12 beautiful bass in less than an hour!(They laughed at Dave’s beat up old boat, but when he blew them off the water with his secret “go to” bait rigging, they shut up real quick…)

* A step-by-step guide for modifying a little-known Canadian bass lure…and how you can use it to haul in dozens of bass in just a few hours. (Once you put the weedless hook and chrome spinner on the front, it will outperform most “mainstream” lures in North America!)

* And hundreds more… (by the way, these secret are from a different Dan… Dan Watkins… and he’s far older than I am!) This stuff is game-changing, and I can’t wait for you to dig in.You won’t believe what happens to your catch count… Prediction: If you love catching bass, it’s most definately for you!) Now, it’s time to talk about your tackle…along with how to tantalize a big bass’ greed glands… Bass are an excellent species to seek out as a beginner and as you can tell by all the bass fishing tournaments, they are highly sought out by the professional angler as well. Men, women and children of all ages enjoy bass fishing and it continues to grow in popularity each year.

At one point all most every bait used has probably caught a bass. Manufacturers and fishermen classify bass lures by the depth at which they are most effectively used – top-water, mid-water and deep-running.

Top Water lures. Now, of course top water lures such as buzz baits, poppers, and surface plugs are great for shallow water. The best results for top water lures will come from water that’s 5 feet or less near some kind of structure. example (weed beds, brush, land-points etc.)

Buzz baits are one of the best baits for a fun catch. The bass will literally attack them out of no where. A good one for the bigger bass too. They’re very productive, especially in late spring at the end of the spawn. They’re good for fishing allot of water in a short time.

I suggest using this to find pools of bass and then slow down withe something more discrete so not to scare all the fish off. You should catch more fish if you attach a plastic shad body to the hook. To the fish it looks like a meal with all the commotion. It looks like a fish fluttering away in a panic. Thats really all they see. The blades become invisible during spinning on the top of the water.

I use a 1/2 ounce buzz bait if the water is choppy or even a 3/4 ounce. A 1/4 ounce if the bass are smaller and or the water is calm. Hula Poppers are one of my favorite top water baits to use. They’re best for calmer waters. It’s quite a bit slower than fishing a buzz bait.

Mid-water- Some mid-water lure examples (crank-baits, spoons, minnow-plugs). Spoons are versatile. They can be fished at almost any depth and retrieval speed. Minnow plugs and crank-baits have a lip that makes the lure to dive when you reel it in. Some models float on the surface when at rest, and some sink. The sinking ones can be used at almost all depths by counting down the sinking to the depth you want it.

Crank-Bait lures are one of my favorite lures to use. I’ve caught more fish on crank-baits than almost any other lure. Particularly the Rebel Crawfish. The Big Craw meets the demand for larger, deeper-runners and runs at depths of up to 10 feet. The ultra-light Rebel Crawfish is undoubtedly one of the most popular fishing lures in the world. Its small life-like profile entices and catches all sizes of game fish, especially bass, trout, and panfish.

The versatile family of Rebel Lures Crawfish are quite possibly the most productive series of crankbaits ever made. Deep, shallow, suspending, cast, or trolled for virtually any freshwater species there’s a Rebel Crawfish that’s designed to get the job done. People I fish with always want to know what I’m using when I sneak on my rebel crawfish crank-bait. I suggest having a handful of these things around and in different sizes.

Deep water lures. Deep structure in summer with jigging-spoons that are fished just off the bottom is a good idea. These lures can also be dressed with pork rind or soft-bodied attractors. Other deep water lures include lead-heads, plastic worms etc.. Steep drop offs are great for jigs with an imitation crayfish on it. bouncing it barely off the bottom as you bring it in.

A great lure all most all times of the year(off the deep side of weedbeds, straight out from points, etc…) is a dark colored lead-headed jig with a pork frog attached to that. The jig should have a skirt on it. Its especially productive in early spring and fall. I like to cast it towards shore and hop it out to a drop off and let it flutter over a drop off. Deep diving crankbaits are also good. Just let it hit bottom and let it lay with a little jig once and a while. Use either a dark pork frog or a green one. If you’re careful with that pork frog you’ll get a few – many fishing trips with it, depending on how careful you are. they are really strong. You have to finesse it off the hook though.

Something to keep in mind, Bass like the color RED! If one color doesn’t work, try another. Use brighter colors in clearer water and darker colors in darker water. Another thing to keep in mind, leaches work great also! I have caught a lot of fish on leaches. I think they’re alot better than worms ever thought of being. Probably because of how active the leach is in the water.

With so many fishing lures on the market, and so many lcd tv’s at the tackle shop trying to catch our eyes, it is important to write a review on a couple of these gimmick bass lures, in order to keep you from getting ripped off.

Let me first begin by stating the obvious. When bass are very aggressive, as in the pre-spawn weeks, and during fall, I wouldn’t be going out on a limb to say that bass aren’t very selective during these times. Take a look sometime at what marine biologists find in the stomachs of sharks. Trash cans, shoes, lunch boxes, just about anything you can imagine. In the same way, these “As seen on TV” products can be picked up by any indescriminate fish that happens to be on a hunger binge. That is exactly what these TV commercials want you to see. They introduce the bait to hungry bass in a controlled environment, and trick you into believing that bass or other fish “can’t handle it.” This couldn’t be farther from the truth, and in the end, you’ll be out a pretty penny for these products. Let’s take a look at a few.

1) The Banjo Minnow – Everybody’s heard about this lure, and it has been around seemingly forever. The commercial is well put together, and the product’s action looks fantastic. They show bass after bass hitting this lure, over and over again. Then they offer it to you for a relatively low price, and hook you. Being someone that has a passion for fishing and lures, I had to buy a pack. Then, I received my package. Let me tell you the results.

First, the colors are completely ridiculous. If you have ever read an article about “matching the fry”, or “matching the hatch”, these lures won’t make the cut. Ranging from a ridiculous pick between glowing chartreuse, and a mix between clear and crest toothpaste with sparkles, you are far from matching the baitfish in the lake.

Second, the action looks good on tape, but far different in the water. The stars absolutely must align to make this bait perform the way you want it to. I do have to say that the dying minnow look is special, and I have seen bass engulf this lure…but only during the MOST aggressive days of the year. Your line tends to twist when using this product causing the bait to spin and whirl, instead of bolt and die. The hook through the nose is a great idea, but must be approached with care, as the bass must engulf the ENTIRE lure before setting. This does happen…once again…on highly aggressive days. However, on the day where the bass just seem to be slapping your bait, you have a much higher chance of foul hooking it than landing it through the lip.

Last, these baits are cheaply made. It is only a matter of a few casts, when the “life-like” eyes coming falling our of your lure, leaving nothing but a cold “Jaws-like” gray. It doesn’t really bother me, because these lures christened the bottom of my supply compartment anyways.

Conclusion? Stay away from these lures. Save your $20+ after shipping, and buy the basics….

2) The Blade Dancer – I was eager to try these lures out after seeing an lcd tv commercial at my local fishing shop. I believe Berkeley puts out great products for the most part, but these are absolutely garbage. Of course, in the video, they are hammering bass after bass, and pike afte pike on this lure. I immediately bought the tackle shop out of this lure, and tried them out. Verdict? Absolute garbage.

First, the lures are very expensive. They give you only one spoon, which you attach the remaining lures to throughout use. Lock this lure up on a log, and your whole pack is gone.

Second, I’ve cast this lure out in the most aggressive times…I’ve worked on swimming the lure, jigging the lure, and doing everything universally that the video talks about, and all I did was foul hook a perch on accident in the side.

Lastly, the action does look amazing, yet, the presentation is very hard to control. Either you get a violent wobbling of the lure, or nothing at all. This cannot work on days where you need to really slow your presentation. I will say, that in late summer and early fall, I have had a lot of success landing Northern Pike. Again, however, anybody who goes bass fishing during this time has inevitably hit a pike with a grub or senko on accident. I’m not sold that this is the only lure for pike. However, with the flash of the spoon, and violent wobbling, at the right time of the year, this can be a pike killer.

Conclusion, stay away from this lure unless you are singling out pike for the day. Only work it during late summer, early fall, when pike are most aggressive. When you see a TV advertising a lure…Keep walking!!!

Stick to the basics. Buy yourself a few jigs, cranks, spinnerbaits, and plastics, such as a ribbon worm, and Senko. These will keep the price down, but fill your tackle box with universal baits for anytime of the year. Companies try to use these “As seen on TV” methods to make a lure “original”. I have only one comment for that. There is a reason why these lures weren’t sold in MASS quantites to sports and tackle shops…They would just take up more shelf space.

Do you spend hours in the spring sitting in your bass boat wondering why you’re having such a hard timing getting a bite? Your bait seems to be devoured by everything from bream (bluegills) to tree limbs, but not by bass fish. There’s definitely a reason for the elusiveness of these cold-blooded, aquatic vertebrates. Read on to learn about the habitual habits of bass fish!

From mid-April until June – whether you’re bass fishing in Tennessee, California, or somewhere in between – bass fish are very busy with spawning responsibilities. Guarders (otherwise known as territorial males) spend much of their time doing just what their name implies – guarding their eggs and offspring from other aquatic or reptilian predators. Often when you do catch a bass, you’ll notice that it’s a female (commonly a pregnant one, too). While the male bass protect the eggs, the females are on the hunt for food. So, the females are racing around searching for food, usually in the form of a crappie or bream offspring Happy Meal.

Now that you have a better idea about what is going on under the surface of your favorite bass fishing lake,it’s time to find out where all these fish are hanging out. Your best bet is to coast your bass boat on over to a nearby shoreline; the type of place where bream like to build their beds – amid weeds, sunken logs, and debris. Generally, you can locate bream near their beds, which look like bass beds in their honeycomb shape, but are a lot smaller.

The next step to luring a bass fish is to use the right bait. Let’s think about it logically for a second: bass fish are hungry during the spring, and spend their timescouring the lake for small crappie and bream fish. It makes pretty good sense, then, to use bait that resemble these fish. Bream fish are colorful, so you can doll up your hook by adding a shiny & reflectivebream imitation bait that has colors such as yellow, teal or orange. The crappie imitation baitis easier because these fish are various shades of silver, so metallic bait should work well.

The final (and most rewarding) step is to reel a large bass fish right into your boat! It doesn’t matter if you’re enjoying daytime bass fishing or preferthe cooler, nighttime excursions – being aware of the habits of the fish you are pursuing is a good way to bring a steady supply of them into your cooler. Learn more tips and tricks by visiting an active and fishing blog, or get real-life advice from a bass fishing forum. Happy fishing!
